Wellbeing
At our school, student wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. We want every student to feel safe, included and ready to learn. Whether your child needs help with their mental, emotional, social or physical wellbeing, we are here to help them thrive at school and in daily life.
How we support student wellbeing
Supporting each student’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing is part of everyday school life.
We do this through:
- teachers who help students feel welcome and included
- access to school counsellor and specialist staff
- programs that support health, social skills, attendance and positive behaviour
- help for students who are new or changing year levels
- clear expectations for behaviour and respectful relationships
- staff who get to know each child and work closely with families
- developing health care plans for students
- open communication about wellbeing and support.

At Bundeena Public School, student wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where every child feels connected, valued, and supported to thrive. Our wellbeing initiatives include the lunchtime M.A.T.E.S. program (My Action To Encourage Someone), where Stage 3 students build leadership and empathy by playing with and encouraging younger students who may need a friend. We also offer a before-school Buddy Reading program that promotes positive relationships and a love of reading across year levels. Each term, students participate in engaging wellbeing days designed to strengthen resilience, connection, and belonging within our school community. Support is also available for students experiencing friendship or group conflict, as well as individual support during tricky times. Whole school programs, such as LifeSkillsGo, give staff useful data to ensure all students are seen and valued. Open Parachute lessons are delivered from K-6 and give students useful tools and essential skills for building their Social and Emotional Learning and capacity. Through strong collaboration with families, classroom teachers, and learning support teams, we work together to ensure every student feels known, cared for, and empowered to succeed.
M.A.T.E.S.
Our M.A.T.E.S. (My Action to Encourage Someone) Student Leadership Program empowers Stage 3 students to make a positive difference in our school community. Through this initiative, students volunteer to join dedicated teams focused on creating a safe, inclusive, and happy environment for all. Whether supporting younger students in reading groups, leading playtime activities, offering friendship support, or welcoming families at the school gate, our M.A.T.E.S. leaders model kindness, responsibility, and initiative. This program not only strengthens our school culture but also provides valuable opportunities for students to grow as confident, compassionate leaders.
At Bundeena Public School we have a strong Kindergarten Buddy program. Students from year 6 are partnered with incoming Kindergarten students. Our Kindergarten Buddy Program is designed to create a warm, supportive start to school life by pairing our youngest students with older peers. This program helps build confidence, ease transitions, and foster a strong sense of belonging from day one. Through regular shared activities—such as reading together, playground support, and collaborative projects—buddies model positive behaviour, develop leadership skills, and form meaningful connections across year levels. By nurturing these relationships, we create a caring school culture where every child feels seen, supported, and valued.
At the beginning of each new year our Stage Three students participate in a whole day workshop Focusing on leadership. They participate in challenges, activities, games and experiences that aim to broaden their idea of what a leader is and how they can make a positive contribution to their school, their community and themselves.
“I loved the challenges and games, they encouraged me to try something difficult and work with people I don’t normally work with.” - Molly (yr 5)
“A leader doesn’t have to wear a badge to make a difference.” - Paxton (yr 6).
